At IU, how can I obtain and pay for my own BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) Redirector account?
The BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) Redirector is a billed service offered by UITS to Indiana University faculty, staff, and participants in the Kelley pilot program. With a BES data plan you purchase from your cellular provider, the IU BES Redirector service enables full access to your IU Exchange email account (including mail, calendar, tasks, etc.) from your BlackBerry device. For more, see Getting started with a BlackBerry at IU.
On this page:
About privately paid individual accounts on IU's BES
Indiana University departments usually purchase BES accounts for their employees, but faculty and staff can purchase individual BES accounts if the need arises.
Note: If your department is already being charged for BES accounts, do not sign up for a private account.
At IU, the BES Redirector service is a pre-pay service with no refunds. The one-time activation fee is $45. The service fee of $6 per month will be charged up front, pro-rated based on the remaining months of the fiscal year. (IU's fiscal year runs July-June. For example, if you purchase your BES account in September, you will be charged up-front only for the 10 months remaining in the fiscal year.)
Note: The IU BES monthly service fee is separate from any monthly charges from your cellular provider (i.e., to use IU's BES Redirector, you pay service fees to IU and your cellular provider).
Yearly renewal is not automatic. You will have to renew your purchase every July for as long as you want to keep the account. If you don't interrupt your service, you will not need to pay the Activation Fee again.
How to sign up for an individual account
Graduate students, faculty, and staff of the Kelley School of Business who are eligible for the Kelley pilot program should sign up through the Kelley pilot page.
To sign up for an individual IU BES account, you need:
- A BlackBerry device
- A BES data plan from your cellular provider
- An IU Exchange account (The IU BES Redirector is not available on Cyrus/Webmail accounts, Imail or Umail accounts, or any non-IU Exchange accounts.)
To sign up for an IU BES account:
- Go to the IU BES
Account Request form.
- After you log in through CAS, the system will check to
see if you have a valid Exchange account.
- If you do, you will see a screen saying:
ClickYour account has a valid Exchange account. The following form will pre-fill in several entries for the BlackBerry Exchange Account. If you wish to purchase an IU BES account for a different username than you've logged in with, please change the COMMENTS section of the form.
Go to Form.
- If you do not have an IU BES account, you will see the following
message:
Your account DOES NOT have a valid Exchange Account. You must have an IU Exchange account to purchase a BES account.
This service is not available to Cyrus/Webmail users, Imail users, or any IU users with non-IU Exchange accounts. See: https://kb.iu.edu/data/axic.html for more.
However, you will be able to continue on to the form anyway, in case you're purchasing for another user or group. Click
Go to Form. - If you already have an IU BES account and are renewing, you will see
the following:
Your account has a valid Exchange Account.
Your exchange account already has an BES Server Account. Which option would you like to use:
- Renew My Account for another year
- Take over account payment from my department
- Pay for a BES account for another username
Choose the option you want, and then click
Proceed.
- If you do, you will see a screen saying:
- The form should have automatically filled in the "Department
Code", "Total Transaction Amount", "Description", and "Email"
fields. In the "Card Number" field, enter the credit card number to
which you will charge your IU BES service. Fill in the "Expiration Date"
field, and then enter the three-digit CVC number (also known as the
security number) from the back of your credit card. Enter your card's
billing address and ZIP code, as well as your name as it appears on
the card.
- In the "Comments" field, enter your Exchange login name (i.e.,
your username) if it's not already there. If you're creating this for
a group account, enter the group account's username instead.
- Click
pay now.
The IUPay system will then notify you at the email address you
specified that you have made a payment, or if a problem arises, that
there is a problem with the payment. After the payment is processed,
allow up to three business days for the IU BES account to be created and
activated. After activation, you will receive another email message
from commreq@iu.edu . Once you receive
this message, to activate your device on IU's BES, see At IU, how do I activate a BlackBerry on the BES?
